GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

11-Month Position. Must have been canvassed through the civil service eligible list or currently hold the School Lunch Manager title through the Nassau Civil Service Commission.

Plans, directs, and administers the school lunch program in a large school, several small schools, or in a large school district; performs related duties as required.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES

Under general supervision, the position involves responsibility for efficiently and economically providing nutritious lunches for school children. Immediate or general supervision is exercised over the work of one or more cook-managers and other school lunch program personnel.

TYPICAL DUTIES

1. Plans and directs the operation of a school lunch program for all schools in the district.

2. Sets up procedures and policies for the effective operation of the program.

3. Selects school lunch personnel and is responsible for training and evaluating work performance.

4. Coordinates and supervises the purchase of all foods, supplies and equipment.

5. Supervises the maintenance of record keeping for reports relating to school lunch program activities.

6. Supervises the collection of and accounting for cash receipts.

7. Provides information to school staff, students and community groups which will promote increased interest in the program.

8. Directs the preparation of the school lunch program budget for current and longrange expenditures and advises the administration on capital outlay for equipment.

9. Assures that all food and service requirements, rules and laws are followed.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

1. Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of nutrition and their application to the health of children.

2. Thorough knowledge of all phases of the school lunch program.

3. Good knowledge of the principles and practices of large quantity food preparation, menu planning, purchasing, equipment selection and care, sanitary food handling and storage.

4. Ability to plan and supervise the work of others.

5. Ability to train personnel.

6. Ability to express ideas clearly and to write reports effectively.

7. Ability to show initiative.

8. Ability to use tact and good judgment, be courteous and resourceful.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Training and Experience Completion of two years (60 credits) of education at a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university. For each year, the thirty (30) credits must have included at least six (6) credits in nutrition and/or dietetics. and Four years of satisfactory paid experience preparing and cooking food on a large scale.

NOTE: Experience, as outlined above, in excess of the four-year requirement, may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis, including the six (6) credits in nutrition and/or dietetics, up to a maximum of two years. 

School building/district experience- Preferred but not required

Fingerprint clearance- District will provide information

Part-time and Sub Part-time Food Service Workers

Title: Part-time Food Service Workers and Sub Part-time Food Service Workers

 

Hours: 10:45am-1:45pm, daily or as needed and when school is in session

 

PayScale: $20.79/hr if hired part-time; $17.71/hr if hired as a sub

 

Description: North Bellmore is seeking part-time and part-time substitute food service workers for the 2025-2026 school year. Food service workers report directly to the Director of Food Services and the building principal.

 

Expectations:

  • Basic knowledge of the proper method of serving food

  • Basic knowledge of the principles and practices of sanitation and personal hygiene as applied to the preparation and serving of food

  • Ability to use and care for food service equipment and appliances

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions

  • Ability to perform physical activity of position

  • Ability to use a cash register

  • Other duties, as assigned

 

Requirements:

  • Completion of eighth grade education  

  • Fingerprint clearance from NYS
