Description: A physical education (PE) teacher instructs students about sports, physical development, health, and proper nutrition. PE teachers show students not only how to play various sports, but also how physical activity benefits the muscles and overall health. PE teachers also plan activities that help make exercise-based learning more engaging for students. PE teachers must also adjust their curricula to adapt to children with disabilities or different physical abilities to create a positive experience for all students. PE teachers report directly to their building principal(s) and the PE principal liaison.
Expectations:
Plan and grade lessons, as well as other P.E.-related assessments
Stay current with state and local standards for physical education curriculum, fitness, and nutrition expectations
Ensure continuity, progression, and cohesiveness in all units of study
Assess student learning through effective differentiated teaching in accordance with state standards
Work with students individually when necessary to assess fitness and health progress, improve performance levels, and achieve overall physical education success
Use a variety of methods and approaches to match curricular objectives and the range of student needs, and ensure equal opportunity for all students
Understanding of students' disabilities and adaptive PE techniques where applicable
Work with colleagues and department liaison to coordinate curriculum goals
Grade students on participation, best effort, and knowledge of the curriculum
Work with support staff to benefit from their specialist knowledge and to maximize their effectiveness within lessons for students with special needs
Set high expectations for all students, to deepen their knowledge and understanding and to maximize their achievement
Use positive management of behavior in an environment of mutual respect that allows students to feel safe and secure and promotes their self-esteem
Communicate with parents or guardians
Requirements:
NYS Physical Education Certification
Excellent communication skills
Excellent understanding of stretching and other warm-up strategies
Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, parents, community members, and staff members
Employment Term: This is a probationary position
