GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

11-Month Position. Must have been canvassed through the civil service eligible list or currently hold the School Lunch Manager title through the Nassau Civil Service Commission.

Plans, directs, and administers the school lunch program in a large school, several small schools, or in a large school district; performs related duties as required.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES

Under general supervision, the position involves responsibility for efficiently and economically providing nutritious lunches for school children. Immediate or general supervision is exercised over the work of one or more cook-managers and other school lunch program personnel.

TYPICAL DUTIES

1. Plans and directs the operation of a school lunch program for all schools in the district.

2. Sets up procedures and policies for the effective operation of the program.

3. Selects school lunch personnel and is responsible for training and evaluating work performance.

4. Coordinates and supervises the purchase of all foods, supplies and equipment.

5. Supervises the maintenance of record keeping for reports relating to school lunch program activities.

6. Supervises the collection of and accounting for cash receipts.

7. Provides information to school staff, students and community groups which will promote increased interest in the program.

8. Directs the preparation of the school lunch program budget for current and longrange expenditures and advises the administration on capital outlay for equipment.

9. Assures that all food and service requirements, rules and laws are followed.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

1. Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of nutrition and their application to the health of children.

2. Thorough knowledge of all phases of the school lunch program.

3. Good knowledge of the principles and practices of large quantity food preparation, menu planning, purchasing, equipment selection and care, sanitary food handling and storage.

4. Ability to plan and supervise the work of others.

5. Ability to train personnel.

6. Ability to express ideas clearly and to write reports effectively.

7. Ability to show initiative.

8. Ability to use tact and good judgment, be courteous and resourceful.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Training and Experience Completion of two years (60 credits) of education at a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university. For each year, the thirty (30) credits must have included at least six (6) credits in nutrition and/or dietetics. and Four years of satisfactory paid experience preparing and cooking food on a large scale.

NOTE: Experience, as outlined above, in excess of the four-year requirement, may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis, including the six (6) credits in nutrition and/or dietetics, up to a maximum of two years. 

School building/district experience- Preferred but not required

Part-time and Sub Part-time Food Service Workers

Title: Part-time Food Service Workers and Sub Part-time Food Service Workers

 

Hours: 10:45am-1:45pm, daily or as needed and when school is in session

 

PayScale: $20.79/hr if hired part-time; $17.71/hr if hired as a sub

 

Description: North Bellmore is seeking part-time and part-time substitute food service workers for the 2025-2026 school year. Food service workers report directly to the Director of Food Services and the building principal.

 

Expectations:

  • Basic knowledge of the proper method of serving food

  • Basic knowledge of the principles and practices of sanitation and personal hygiene as applied to the preparation and serving of food

  • Ability to use and care for food service equipment and appliances

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions

  • Ability to perform physical activity of position

  • Ability to use a cash register

  • Other duties, as assigned

 

Requirements:

  • Completion of eighth grade education

Daily Substitute Teacher
  • Follow lesson plans provided by the regular Teacher to create a cohesive and consistent learning experience for students
  • Manage the classroom effectively to encourage student participation, minimize distractions and maintain a positive learning environment

  • Work Monday-Friday; Shifts are assigned to the employee based on availability (8:15am-11:45am, 10:45am-2:15pm, 11:30am-3:00pm)

  • Ensure child safety in hallways and on stairs 

  • Implement formal Behavior Intervention Plan

Title: School Nurse  

  

Pay scale: Based on NBTA Contract   

  

Start Date: ASAP

 

Description: The school nurse provides immediate general first aid to the students, staff, and visitors at the school.  They review immunization and physical exam records and arrange school physicals for students as required by school policy for those who do not choose to be examined by a private physician. They provide mandatory screenings as required by law and dispense medication to students as indicated by the doctor's prescription. The school nurse keeps the Building Principal(s) and the Director of Special Education Services apprised of building and student health and wellness issues. They communicate with parents and teachers concerning student health. They provide organization and coordination in the delivery of healthcare services within the district, in collaboration with healthcare providers, administrators, teachers, parents and other staff.  They are required to maintain acceptable health standards and the school health records. Additionally, the emergency treatment of student and employee health problems is also a requirement.   

  

Expectations:   

  

  • Responsible for accurate attendance recording  

  • Administers first aid and emergency treatment to students, employees, and visitors utilizing the protocols established by the State and District, when necessary  

  • Performs examinations and screening procedures, such as visual, auditory, scoliosis, as required by State Law   

  • Prepares and maintains health records; medical and dental   

  • Prepares Critical Care Plans for students as needed  

  • Dispenses medication as needed  

  • Reviews and keeps records in accordance with state and local protocols  

  • Provides care of a student or staff member who has suffered an injury or emergency illness   

  • Observes the student population to identify any new health trends/needs that arise    

  • Works collaboratively with teacher aides, teachers, and school personnel with respect to medical supervision in place for students    

  • Prepares students’ medications for class trips or when going off campus  

  • Maintains health records for students visiting for various programs (Alpha, band, orchestra etc.)  

  • Maintains up-to-date cumulative health records on all students   

  • Advises administration on exclusion and readmission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases and immunizations   

  • Notifies parents/guardian of illness or injury, as needed  

  • Arranges transportation of sick or injured student, employee, or visitor to hospital, as needed  

  • Orders and maintains inventory of medical supplies  

  • Attends in-service training programs, faculty meetings, district committees, staff meetings, conference days and professional development  

  • Attends faculty feelings as needed 

  • Attends 90-minute Professional Development as required 

  • Other related duties as assigned by administration   

   

Requirements:   

  • Possession of license issued by the State of New York to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse  

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, parents, community members, and staff members

Substitute School Nurse/Daily Lunch Coverage Nurse

Description: Substitute school nurses and lunch coverage nurses are expected to perform professional nursing services at any of our North Bellmore elementary schools, during their assigned hours.  Shift durations vary from 8:15am-3:15pm, depending on need.  He/she will provide organization and coordination in the delivery of healthcare services within the district, in collaboration with school healthcare providers, administrators, teachers, parents and other staff.  He/she is required to maintain acceptable health standards and the school health records. Additionally, the emergency treatment of student and employee health problems is also a requirement. 

 

Expectations: 

  • Periodic examinations and screening procedures as required by State Law and the Board of Education 

  • Prepare and maintain health records – medical and dental not mandated by New York State 

  • Assist school personnel in maintaining universal precautions in schools 

  • Support building administrators with implementing COVID-19 protocols and completing the appropriate intake forms for students and staff 

  • Provide care of a student or staff member who has suffered an injury or emergency illness 

  • Administer first aid  

  • Observe the student population in order to identify any new health trends/needs that arise  

  • Work collaboratively with teacher aides, teachers and school personnel with  respect to 1x1 medical supervision in place for students  

  • Instruct teachers or teacher aides to administer emergency medicines according to doctor’s orders 

  • Maintain up-to-date cumulative health records on all students 

  • Advise administration on exclusion and readmission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases and immunizations 

  • Other related duties as assigned
