Job Description

Title: ENL Leave Replacement Teacher April - June 2026 (Immediate opportunity to substitute teach daily)

Pay Scale: Based on the NBTA Contract 

Description: The North Bellmore School District seeks an English as a New Language Leave Replacement Teacher to service students K-6 from April through June of 2026. The selected candidate may also substitute teach immediately in advance of the leave replacement position. 

The English as a New Language Specialist provides instructional support to students identified as Limited English Proficient by the NYSITELL and NYSESLAT tests. The ENL Specialist ensures students acquire English language speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills through a variety of flexible models that prioritize push-in and pull-out services guided by the effective use of co-teaching practices. The English as a New Language Specialist will use his or her expertise in language acquisition to collaborate with a caseload of teachers and provide on-site professional development. The ENL Specialist reports to the building principal(s), ENL Principal Liaison, and Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction. 

Expectations: 

  • Experience, knowledge, and background related to N.Y.S. learning standards and multiple assessments including formative and benchmark assessments in unit designs. 

  • Knowledge and evidence of unit planning based on power standards and big ideas, differentiated instruction and curriculum mapping.

  • Co-plans, prepares and facilitates daily standards-based lessons that utilize a variety of ENL instructional strategies which differentiate teaching based on the diverse and individual needs of all students. 

  • Co-teaches with general education teachers and supports student learning through modelling, lesson planning, team teaching, data analysis and ongoing feedback through dialogue and reflections.

  • Desire and knowledge to balance students’ social/emotional and academic/intellectual needs. 

  • Uses varied instructional methods and assessments to support engaged learning, higher-order thinking skills, meaningful, authentic use of knowledge, multiple intelligences, and the integration of 21st century skills.

  • Strong technology skills: ability to incorporate technology to enhance instruction and learning.  

  • Work collaboratively with grade level teachers, support staff and special education service providers, as well as serve as a member of our Early Intervention Team. 

  • Evidence of strong classroom management with an emphasis on student engagement and student success in the classroom. 

  • Commitment to curriculum development, professional development, flexible teamwork, and instructional technology. 

  • Experience working with students with diverse cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds.

  • Willingness to perform community and family outreach.

  • Familiarity with recent ENL (ESL/ELL) reforms and "best practice" as well as various ENL (ESL/ELL) methodologies. 

  • Administer the Home Language Questionnaires and administers NYSITELL to determine student eligibility for ENL services.  

  • Administer the NYSESLAT exam yearly. 

  • Serve as a member of the Language Proficiency Team. 

  • Have a working knowledge and understanding of federal, state and local rules and regulations to determine which students require services.

  • Other duties or responsibilities as assigned. 

Requirements:

  • Current and valid NYS ESOL/TESOL certification required.

  • Common Branch K-6, preferred but not required.

  • Experience in a public-school setting, preferred but not required. 

  • Bilingual or Multilingual, preferred.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, parents, community members, and staff members.
